Known as “El Caballero de la Salsa” (The Gentleman of Salsa), Puerto Rican singer Gilberto Santa Rosa has been lauded for his improvisational skill on the mic ever since he started in the mid-‘80s. Fast forward twenty-plus years later and the suave crooner is still showcasing his lyrical dexterity, and nowadays he’s doing it without his trademark mustache. Yes, he shaved off the Tom Selleck–like 'stash for his upcoming 25th album, Irrepetible (out June 29; Sony Records). But not to worry, it doesn’t sound like his musical prowess was dependent on that little swath of hair.
“All my CDs are a product of an evolution and I try to make each and every one unrepeatable,” said Santa Rosa in reference to the title of the record. “[It’s] an album that has its own personality and a lot of me.” The 10-track salsa production includes weighty collaborations with Boricua singer-songwriterKany Garcia, Dominican merenguero Johnny Ventura, Venezuelan super group Guaco, Colombian vallenato artist Felipe Peláez. Santa Rosa also worked with Panamanian legend Ruben Blades, with whom he recorded “Me Cambiaron las Preguntas,” a booming anthem about the complicated world in which we live that’ll make you want to get up and dance.
