Elvis Crespo is Back!

Elvis Crespo is back with a new look, a new sound and a new record. Yes, we’re referring to the same guy who gave us the merengue hits “Suavemente” and “Pintame” over a decade ago. The 39-year-old Puerto Rican singer’s eighth album is aptly titled Indestructible (out this week) for the obstacles he’s faced—and overcome—throughout his long career. The “new and upated” Elvis Crespo is looking towards the future.

Why did you call the new albumIndestructible?
Because I’ve had a long career and I’m still here. I’ve had songs that have broken cultural barriers, language barriers. In Indestrutible, I’ve reinvented my sound and modernized it. I traveled to the Dominican Republican, where there’s an urban merengue movement, because I wanted to create something new.
How does this album reflect your personality?
In every way. When I finished it, I knew that my hairstyle didn’t go with this record. So we created a modern look. We presented the record like a superhero comic book; even the album cover looks like a comic.
How has your career changed since Suavemente?
It’s totally changed simply because I’ve traveled more, seen more and stumbled along the way. The old Elvis Crespo didn’t play any instruments. Now I play the guitar, the piano. I’m more wise now, yet I still have the same energy.
What is your favorite song?
I really like “Novia Bella,” which I dedicated to my wife when we married. It’s a very special song.
What has been the biggest challenge in your career?
Every launch is a challenge. You put everything into an album, and the challenge is that people accept it. That’s what every artist wants.
You have a bit of blonde in your hair. Do blondes have more fun?
I have fun no matter what.
